Dangerous Rashes in Primary Care: Drug Eruptions and “Don’t Miss” Diagnoses

This live virtual session with Dr. Jennifer Tran, MD, FRCPC took place on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, as part of the accredited 2026 Primary Care Expert Series.

When and where

  • Date: Tuesday, May 5, 2026

  • Time: 8:00 to 9:30 PM ET

  • Location: Live online

Learning objectives

By the end of this session, you’ll be able to:

  • Differentiate benign rashes from dangerous presentations, including SCAR (SJS/TEN, DRESS, AGEP), vasculitic and infectious etiologies, using a primary care triage framework.

  • Use a high-yield history (medications, timing, mucosal involvement, systemic symptoms, exposures) to identify likely causes and outline immediate actions, including what to stop, what to monitor, and what to document.

  • Determine urgency of escalation (ED vs urgent specialist referral vs outpatient follow-up) and initiate appropriate initial investigations and supportive care while awaiting specialist input.
