Heart Failure Course
Coming 2027

Build confidence in diagnosing, treating, and managing heart failure in primary care.

This self-paced online course is designed for NPs and primary care providers seeking a practical, evidence-based approach to heart failure care, from recognition and diagnosis to treatment optimization and long-term management.

Topics include heart failure classification (HFrEF, HFmrEF, HFpEF, and HFimpEF), common and atypical presentations, BNP and NT-proBNP interpretation, diagnostic testing and echocardiography, foundational therapies and medication titration, diuretics and congestion, managing hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal function changes, recognizing decompensation, transitions in care, cardiology referral, and advance care planning.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain heart failure pathophysiology, causes, staging, and classification by ejection fraction.

  • Identify common and atypical presentations of heart failure and the role of natriuretic peptides and echocardiography in diagnosis.

  • Describe the evidence for initiating, sequencing, and titrating guideline-directed therapies across heart failure types.

  • Identify strategies to monitor diuretic therapy, blood pressure, renal function, potassium, and common comorbidities.

  • Recognize early signs of decompensation and describe when to coordinate transitions in care or refer to cardiology or specialized care.
